Atari 2600

Atari 2600 was released in September 1977. It had been the most demanded home video game system. Atari's huge success ultimately led to its very own downfall. The company ran successfully but the programmers were not content with the treatment they were given. Bushnell who was the co founder of Atari made Atari a complete corporate place, and all the fun at the workplace was gone. Therefore the programmers started to drop out. Atari started losing its programmers who were accountable for Atari’s immense success. These programmers then established their own companies to publish games.

Experts believe that Atari 2600 also originally called the Atari VCS (video computer system) is the pioneer of modern videogames. Atari has played a great role in the expansion of a multi-million dollar industry. Earlier on, there was little concept of a gaming console. Atari being the pioneers of console games paved way to modern gaming consoles such as Xbox and Nintendo. In reality, a lot of these gaming consoles actually owe a lot to Atari. Atari presented a new dimension to the audiences and game fans. Back in the late 1970s and 80s when computers were non-existent, Atari set up itself as being a very modern gaming console, where users could change games by simply inserting a new disc at the top of the console. Atari fans were also thrilled by the ease of use and less hassle of changing one game to the other. Consoles earlier to Atari did not have this functionality which is why Atari had a competitive edge over the others and managed to sell over thirty million consoles!
Atari became immensely popular in the late 80s and early 90s before the computers hit the markets in the mid 90s leading to more fashionable and graphic games such as Sega and Sony. They created games based on 32-bit gaming systems. Whereas gaming giants such as Nintendo and Atari decided to switch from 32-bit to 64-bit systems. However, over the next 10 years’ Atari was pushed out of competition due to the over sophistication of games and graphics used. However, as gaming has advanced, we can see more sophistication and graphical elegance. Although this was missing during the previous times but it certainly laid an incredible foundation for the modern games. Gaming consoles such as Xbox, Wii has a lot to owe to the success to Atari 2600 as it helped boom the gaming industry.

However, the generation that grew up playing Atari still remembers their gaming experiences as being ‘full of fun’ and a time spent with their siblings or parents. Siblings would fight over and become more competitive over gaming sessions. Indeed, there is a lot we owe to Atari 2600.
